What is Waqf?
Waqf is a sustainable and ongoing charitable fund, recognised as a form of Sadaqah Jariyah—a long-term act of charity that continues to benefit others over time. It involves voluntarily dedicating an asset or wealth to serve a charitable purpose, ensuring its benefits last indefinitely.
The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, “When a man dies, his deeds come to an end except for three things: Sadaqah Jariyah (ceaseless charity); a knowledge which is beneficial, or a virtuous descendant who prays for him (for the deceased).”
Sahih Muslim
Historical Inspiration
🔹 When the early Muslims arrived in Madinah, finding clean water was a real challenge. The only good well, Bir Rumah, was privately owned and expensive to use. Uthman ibn ‘Affan (RA) stepped forward, bought the well with his own wealth, and made it a waqf so everyone could draw water for free. Over the centuries, the land around it was planted with date palms, the harvest used to support orphans and the poor. Remarkably, this same waqf is still active today, still in Uthman’s name, helping to fund charitable projects including land and a hotel near the Prophet’s Mosque. His gift has continued to benefit the Ummah for more than 1,400 years.
🔹 Al-Azhar Mosque & University in Cairo, Egypt, was established over 1,000 years ago through a Waqf donation and remains one of the oldest and most respected Islamic institutions in the world.
These timeless examples show the power of Waqf to create lasting impact—and you can be part of that legacy by supporting the JMIC Waqf Fund today.
