Marriage Service

At Jami Mosque & Islamic Centre Birmingham (JMIC), we are authorised to conduct Islamic Nikah ceremonies and to register marriages in accordance with UK law.

Our aim is to make the process smooth, respectful, and fully compliant with both Islamic and civil requirements.

Procedure for Marriage Registration

Obtain a Confirmation Letter from JMIC

Before your appointment at the Register Office, both the bride and groom must visit the JMIC office.
Please bring:

  • Passports of the bride and groom

Our office will issue a letter to the Register Office confirming that your marriage will be registered by Jami Mosque & Islamic Centre Birmingham.

Complete the Registration Information Form

You will be asked to fill in the registration information form provided by the JMIC office. This form contains all necessary details required for both the Islamic Nikah and civil registration.

Attend Your Notice of Marriage Appointment

You must then book and attend a “Notice of Marriage” appointment at your local Register Office. This is a legal requirement before a marriage can take place in the UK.

Bring the Marriage Authority/Schedule

Once your Notice of Marriage has been approved, you will receive a Marriage Authority (also called a Schedule) from the Register Office.
You must bring this document to the JMIC office before the ceremony can be confirmed and performed.

What is Notice of Marriage?

A Notice of Marriage is a legal document showing:
1. The two people getting married.
2. The registered venue where the ceremony will take place.
If you live in Birmingham you must book an appointment (using the contact details on this page) to give notice at Birmingham Register Office. If you don’t live in Birmingham, but wish to get married or register a civil partnership in Birmingham, you must give notice to the local authority for the area you live in instead.
We recommend you book your notice appointment at 6 to 12 months before your ceremony. Legally you must give notice between 29 days and one year before your ceremony.

When you give notice you’ll need:
• Proof of your name, age, address and nationality
• An interpreter who can speak and read both English and your language fluently if either of you can’t understand of speak English (you can’t interpret for each other).
Once you’ve given notice, it will be displayed in the Register Office for 28 days. After this time, if there are no objections, you’ll be given a document called a ‘marriage authority/schedule’. Once you’ve received the marriage authority/schedule you will bring that back to us immediately so that a date can be set for the ceremonies to take place.

In the event that anyone arriving to give notice of marriage books in more than 10 minutes late, it may not be possible for the appointment to take place and your appointment may be rearranged. The rearranged appointment may not be on the same day.

Additional Information

  • Both parties must be aged 18 or over.
  • Two Muslim witnesses are required for the Nikah ceremony.
  • The mosque can assist with Imam availability, Nikah certificates, and venue arrangements.
  • All marriages conducted at JMIC are carried out in accordance with Islamic Sharia and UK legal requirements.
